ML-Capable Energy Meter
The O-CEI project
O-CEI (Open CloudEdgeIoT Platform Uptake in Large Scale Cross-Domain Pilots) is a major European Horizon Europe Innovation Action project. It builds an open Cloud-Edge-IoT (CEI) platform to support real-time data sharing and energy flexibility predictions across industries.
As part of this project, and in collaboration with O-CEI partner UCC, mSemicon developed an IoT meter with load predicting capabtilities, called the AD5514. Its main features are summarised below.
How does it work?
The AD5514 is an intelligent edge energy gateway that combines real-time three-phase electrical measurements, Zigbee device data and local machine-learning integration. It provides standardised interfaces for monitoring, forecasting and demand-response services while supporting secure remote management and controlled sharing of energy data across the O CEI continuum.
The gateways’s summary features are:
• Real-time monitoring of three-phase voltage, current, power, frequency and power factor. (It will also be possible to configure it as single phase with two independent measurements.)
• Edge gateway combining local electricity-meter measurements with Zigbee sensor and actuator data.
• Standardised access to energy data through Modbus RTU, MQTT and structured JSON reporting.
• Local edge processing reduces cloud traffic, latency and dependence on continuous internet access.
• ML-ready data interface supporting energy forecasting, optimisation and demand-flexibility models.
• Configurable mapping of physical meters, Zigbee devices and parameters to model inputs and outputs.
• Supports remote control of compatible loads for demand response and energy optimisation.
• Secure, remotely maintainable architecture with authenticated firmware updates for both processors.
• Designed for interoperability with O CEI Cloud–Edge–IoT services, datasets and AI models.
• Suitable for homes, commercial buildings, energy communities and distributed-energy pilots.
• Can be offered as a complete hardware gateway, a standardised energy-data service, or an O CEI deployment blueprint.
• Maintains local ownership of raw operational data while allowing authorised services to access selected measurements.
The gateway is currently at TRL7/8 (October 2026).
Note: The development of the ML-featured AD5514 meter/gateway was funded under the EU O-CEI project (No. 101189589).
